Lexus GX 470 Tailgate Table

Just finished my rear barn door camping table in my GX470. Had some help from my dad and one of my best friends. Everything was purchased at Lowe’s except for the collapsible sink and the mounts for the tools (Shovel, Hammer, Hatchet). This is going to be nice to use as a cutting board to prep food, cook on with my gas stove, and wash dishes and clean up after meals.

First I purchased the wood, hinges, grommets, heat-shrink, cable, and finish all at Lowes. The wood I bought was only $20 for a 6’x16″x1″ piece. We cut the length of it down to 41″. The strap I ended up using was the strap that is located in the rear cubby area with the cargo net of my Lexus. I just drilled a hole in the plastic and used a #8-32 x 3/4″ flat Phillips with nuts, washer, and lock washer. I punched through the strap using a wood screw to make a hole big enough to get the flat Phillips through. The other strap I just used a #8 x 3/4″ flat Phillips wood screw with a washer. The hinges are black 3″ wide by 1″ wide. These were mounted with 6 flat Phillips screws that were included with the hinges. The cable I used was 1/16″ and I purchased 5 feet to be safe and still had a decent amount left. The clamps on the ends of the cable are some that my father gave me.

I tried to pay close attention to little details to clean up the all over look. I used heat shrink at the ends of the cables and rubber grommets on the plastic panel so that the metal cord wouldn’t rub through the plastic. I sanded the table with 220 grit sand paper to a smooth finish then laser engraved my logo. For a finish I wanted something that was food safe so I went with Watco Butcher Block Oil and Finish. I have 4 coats on each side to seal the wood and I think it turned out nicely.

The mounts for the shovel, hatchet, and hammer were purchased on amazon for $19 and I had 4 black self tapping screws used to mount them. I just followed the lines of the to line them up and mock them up before actually mounting them. They work great!

Im very happy with the finished product and look forward to using this in the coming weeks. Going to a Lexus GX event in Charlotte on September 14th at Hendrick Lexus with my girlfriend. We’re going to camp the weekend and hope to get some use out of my new table!

If you have any questions about any of the steps I took in building this table just hit me up!
